What the term really means
Retrieval Augmented Generation combines relevant source retrieval with model generated answers.
RAG becomes useful only when connected to a concrete need, a defined source of data and a person responsible for the outcome. The technology label alone does not show whether it fits a workflow.
How it works in practice
RAG retrieves source passages before asking a model to compose an answer, so quality depends on both stages.
The decision to make before implementation
Chunk documents according to structure, attach metadata, enforce access and update the index without leaving stale versions.
A risk worth addressing
The most common problem appears when a team judges RAG by an impressive example but does not test missing data, edge cases or the effect of a wrong action. Stop conditions, escalation and safe rollback should be defined in advance.
How to verify that it works
Measure retrieval relevance, answer support, freshness, citations and behaviour when the required document is absent. Compare results with an agreed baseline and review routine cases, difficult exceptions and human hand-offs separately. A practical RAG test should have an owner, a review date and a recorded example of an outcome the team will not accept.
The PAR HOUSE Agency approach
We approach RAG from the workflow rather than a tool demonstration. Chunk documents according to structure, attach metadata, enforce access and update the index without leaving stale versions. We then build a small measurable scope, record assumptions and expand only after quality review.
