What the term really means
A mechanism that lets a model select a function and prepare structured parameters for execution.
Function Calling becomes useful only when connected to a concrete need, a defined source of data and a person responsible for the outcome. The technology label alone does not show whether it fits a workflow.
How it works in practice
A model may prepare parameters for “check order 123”, but the application validates input, checks permission and executes the function.
The decision to make before implementation
Function schemas should be unambiguous, with read operations separated from changes, payments and deletion.
A risk worth addressing
The most common problem appears when a team judges Function Calling by an impressive example but does not test missing data, edge cases or the effect of a wrong action. Stop conditions, escalation and safe rollback should be defined in advance.
How to verify that it works
Log invalid arguments, rejected calls, tool failures and side effects; valid JSON does not imply a valid decision. Compare results with an agreed baseline and review routine cases, difficult exceptions and human hand-offs separately. A practical Function Calling test should have an owner, a review date and a recorded example of an outcome the team will not accept.
The PAR HOUSE Agency approach
We approach Function Calling from the workflow rather than a tool demonstration. Function schemas should be unambiguous, with read operations separated from changes, payments and deletion. We then build a small measurable scope, record assumptions and expand only after quality review.
